This section is designed to help you understand what to expect after your dental treatment, identify common symptoms, and follow simple dos and don’ts for faster recovery.

Post-Treatment Care

Every dental procedure is unique, but a little care after treatment can go a long way in helping you heal comfortably.

General Guidelines

  • Avoid eating or drinking until the numbness from anaesthesia completely wears off.
  • Stick to soft foods for the first 24 hours — soups, yoghurt, and mashed vegetables are ideal options.
  • Avoid chewing on the treated side until advised by your dentist.
  • Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed.
  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water after 24 hours (unless told otherwise).
  • Avoid smoking or consuming alcohol for at least 48 hours.
  • Brush and floss gently, keeping the treated area clean.
Root Canal Treatment

Mild discomfort is normal for a few days; avoid biting on the treated tooth until your crown is placed.

Tooth Extraction

Keep the gauze in place for the first hour, avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully, and don’t use straws for 24 hours.

Implants

Follow all medication and cleaning instructions carefully; avoid pressure on the implant site.

Scaling / Polishing

Mild sensitivity is normal — use a soft toothbrush and desensitising toothpaste if needed.

Common Symptoms

After dental treatment, it is normal to experience some temporary effects. Here is what you may notice:

Normal Symptoms

  • Mild pain or tenderness at the treatment site
  • Slight swelling or sensitivity to hot/cold foods
  • Minor bleeding after an extraction or cleaning
  • Temporary numbness from anaesthesia

*These usually subside within a few days.

When to Call Your Dentist

  • Persistent pain or swelling beyond 3 days
  • Continuous bleeding that doesn’t stop after pressure
  • Fever, pus discharge, or foul odour
  • Difficulty in swallowing or opening your mouth

  • Follow your dentist’s post-care instructions carefully.
  • Continue taking your medication and attending follow-up appointments.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene – brush twice daily and floss gently.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritation.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet for faster healing.

Don’ts

  • Don’t smoke or consume alcohol during recovery.
  • Don’t eat very hot, hard, or sticky foods immediately after treatment.
  • Don’t skip follow-up visits – they’re important for long-term success.
  • Don’t apply heat or massage swollen areas unless advised.
  • Don’t ignore persistent discomfort – call your dentist right away.
